Steatham Visits. Saturday 4th February 2023. |
This visit was to Tatenhill, Staffordshire, to visit the church of St Michael & All Angels [DE13 9SD]. This is where William Statham, was baptised on Tuesday the 24th March 1693 by the Rector Thomas Masters M.A. to parents William and Alice Statham. William Statham was Robert Steatham's Great Grandfather. See the Hannahs Origins for more details of Robert Steatham's ancestry. |

On a early February winter's day we approached the imposing church with its distinctive square tower. A short while after we arrived we met by chance Phil Coleman - churchwarden, treasurer and local church historian, who kindly gave me a guided tour of the church. |

I was advised by Phil that the font most likely pre-dates William Statham's baptism. Amazing to believe that this is the very font that Robert Steatham's Great Grandfather was baptised in. |

Phil then drew my attention to a monument of 1641 to a Mrs Griffiths who died 1641, stone; kneeling woman set between pilasters under break fronted cornices and oval panel below. This easily pre-dates William's baptism by forty two years. I wonder if his parents William and Alice glanced at this monument while there for the baptism. |

The Rector at the time of William Statham's baptism would have been Thomas Masters M.A. (1625-1696). Thomas Masters was the Rector from Saturday the 3rd February 1663 to his death on Wednesday the 28th March 1696. [thirty three years] |
Thomas Masters, is a featured person Steatham Research - Vicars. The day ended for us with visit to the pub, The Horseshoe, which is a Grade II listed building, dating from C17. We had a lovely meal and were made very welcome. Many thanks to Phil Coleman for his very warm welcome and giving me a guided tour of the church and a very interesting talk on the Rectors listed on the panel.
