Steatham Visits. Saturday 20th July 2024. |
This was a visit we had been wanting to make for sometime. We knew that Joseph Sheldon was killed in action in France on Wednesday the 23rd June 1915, ironically the day after his birthday. The question was where was he buried? After much research he was found to be buried at Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France. - Grave Number IV. H. 35.
We had arrived early Saturday morning in France after an overnight stay at Folkestone. We then checked in at our favourite hotel in the region the La Maison Rouge Qualys at Noeux-les-Mines. We then made the drive through the afternoon sunshine to the nearby cemetery. |

Footnote -
Joseph tragically killed the day after his birthday! With that thought we left him! So glad we came, but somewhat sadened that we had to leave him all alone there so far from his home and the ones who loved him. |
